What are Lansoprazole gastro-resistant capsules?

Lansoprazole gastro-resistant tablets are a type of proton pump inhibitor used to treat acid related disorders.

Gastro-resistant capsules differ from regular capsules or tablets and are designed to withstand dissolving when they encounter stomach acid. Instead, Lansoprazole gastro-resistant capsules release their active ingredient further down the gastrointestinal tract.

Lansoprazole capsules are available in a variety of strengths, 30mg gastro-resistant capsules are the strongest dose available to buy, however if you have not used this medicine before, it is likely you will be prescribed the 15mg option.

Also available in Lansoprazole Orodispersible (Rapid mouth dissolving) tablets.

What are Lansoprazole gastro-resistant capsules used to treat?

Lansoprazole works to reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. It is commonly used to treat and prevent acid related ailments such as internal ulcers, damage to the food pipe from acid reflux and heartburn.

Much like other proton pump inhibitors, Lansoprazole reduces the amount of stomach acid being produced by blocking the enzymes in the stomach that are responsible for creating it. This gives your gastrointestinal tract time to heal. You may also have heard of Lansoprazole by its brand name ‘Zoton FasTab’.

In some cases, it is prescribed to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which is a rare illness caused by a tumour in the gut or pancreas.

More information about lansoprazole can be found on the NHS website.

How does Lansoprazole work?

As a proton pump inhibitor, Lansoprazole works by preventing the proton pumps of the stomach from working at their full capacity. Proton pumps are responsible for producing stomach acid, due to the inhibitory effect of lansoprazole, the proton pumps produce less stomach acid, and as a result the symptoms of acid related conditions such as acid reflux are relieved.

The inhibitory effects of Lansoprazole will be felt within 1 hour, reaching full effects within 2 hours.

Why is Lansoprazole recommended for treating acid reflux?

Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that has been used to treat acid related disorders for nearly 30 years

Lansoprazole, and it's extended family of Proton pump inhibitors such as Omeprazole and Pantoprazole are considered to be remarkably safe and effective. Clinical studies have shown that Lansoprazole is able to treat more than 90% of gastric and duodenal ulcers, with very minimal adverse effects.
