What is Mebeverine?

Mebeverine is usually taken by adults who are suffering from symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

It contains the active ingredient mebeverine hydrochloride, which is an antispasmodic medicine.

Mebeverine comes available as tablets, capsules, or a liquid that you swallow. You can buy Mebeverine over the counter to treat IBS.

What is Mebeverine used to treat?

Mebeverine is used to relieve the stomach cramps associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

IBS is a common condition that affects the digestive system. A poor diet or stress can exacerbate the symptoms of IBS, which include bloating, abdominal pain, stomach cramps, constipation, diarrhoea, and flatulence.

Taking Mebeverine will help you to carry on with your day without discomfort and help your body to return to a natural rhythm.

As well as IBS, Mebeverine can also be taken to treat other conditions of the stomach and intestines that cause stomach muscle spasms, including:

  • Spastic colitis
  • Spastic constipation
  • Chronic irritable colon
  • Mucous colitis

Why is Mebeverine recommended for treating IBS?

Clinical tests have shown that mebeverine hydrochloride is well tolerated and effective in relieving the symptoms of IBS.

How does Mebeverine work to treat IBS symptoms?

Mebeverine hydrochloride is the active ingredient contained in these tablets. This medicine is an antispasmodic that works by relaxing the muscles in your intestine.

IBS pain comes from your intestines going into spasms, causing the muscles to contract very tightly. By relaxing the intestinal muscles, these cramps go away and so does the pain.

Mebeverine will start to work after about an hour of taking it.

Who can take Mebeverine?

Mebeverine can be taken by most adults and children who are at least 10 years old. However, it may not be suitable for everyone.

You should tell your doctor or pharmacist before you use this medication if:

  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying for a baby
  • You are constipated because of paralytic ileus
