What is Norgeston?

Norgeston is a progestogen-only pill, sometimes referred to as the 'mini pill'. These tablets are taken by women to prevent pregnancy.

Norgeston tablets contain a progestogen called levonorgestrel, which is a type of female sex hormone. When used correctly, it is one of the most reliable forms of reversible contraception, providing 99% effectiveness against pregnancy.

How does Norgeston work?

Norgeston works in three different ways to stop you from getting pregnant:

• It thickens the mucus in your cervix, making it harder for sperm to get inside the womb.

Norgeston will start to work immediately if you start taking it on the first day of your period. If you begin taking it any later than five days after the first day of your period, you will need to use an additional form of contraception for the first seven days.

Who can take Norgeston?

Norgeston should not be taken by anyone who has not yet had their first menstrual bleed. It should also not be taken by women who have already been through menopause.

Do not take this medication without speaking to your doctor if:

• You are have ever had an allergic reaction to any other medicine
• You are currently pregnant or think you might be pregnant
• You have severe diabetes with changes to the blood vessels
• You have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
• You have ever suffered from liver tumours
• You have ever had any circulation problems, including a blood clot in the legs, lungs, heart (heart attack) or brain (stroke)
• You have ever had a severe liver disease and your doctor has told you that your liver function test results have not returned to normal
• You have a form of cancer that is affected by sex hormones, such as currently having or having a history of breast cancer
• You have any illnesses not listed here
